Chang Mai, where many of these hand carved cats originate, is the largest city in Northern Thailand. Surrounded by mountains it lies about eighty miles from the border with Mayamar (formerly Burma) and about one hundred and twenty miles from the border with Laos. The area around Chang Mai has a long and rich tradition of wood carving, with craftsmen and women beautifully sculpting figures and animals. From elegantly simplistic cat carvings to incredibly elaborate families of elephants carved into tree trunks and roots. From elegant gold leaf Buddah's to plain wood owl stools. The wood carvers of northern Thailand are master craftsmen with skills developed over a lifetime and techniques learnt over generations and past from father to son, mother to daughter. In recent years the exporting of these carvings has become an important part of the economy of northern Thailand. Many of the carvings come from village cooperatives or single families.

The carved cats of Caernarvon

A nonsense poem about cats

The carved cats of Caernarvon
were carved by cats in caves.
These carving cats, they came in carts
and coracles carried by the waves.
The carving cats that came to carve
in Caernarvon's caves carved cats,
carried cans of curried lambs
and sweet jars full of boiled bats.
And so the cats in carts they carved
in caves Caernarvon's cat carvings.
Carved cats were carved in angels guise
with harps beneath their fury wings.
Some cats carved, carved cats with mice
preaching love and brotherhood,
before the rascally rodents rose
and signed their name in Satan's blood.
And cats were carved by carving cats
ministering mercies to brute birds,
that ate the lords most sacred worms,
stunned mute by cats forgiving words.
In Caernarvon's caves were carved
cats and kittens cute and kind,
tendering to the little fishes
that out of water, cats did find.
And carving cats, carved cats asleep
cat napping at the end of day,
when the toil of their industries
heavy on their bodies lay.
These cat carvings were carved in caves
by carving cats with cultured care,
so if Cearnarfon calls out come
be sure to see those carved cats there.

Cats in literature.

For more poems about cats see the work of T.S.Elliot who loved cats so much he wrote a whole collection of poems inspired by cats. Other poets moved by cats to compose verse include the eighteenth century poet Christopher Smart in "Jubilate Agno", and in the twentieth century, A.S.J Tessimond, Vita Sackville-West and Ogden Nash. Cats feature in a variety of other literature from the cheshire cat in Lewis Carols' "Alice in Wonderland" to Rudyard Kiplings' Just So " The cat who walked by himself".

Cats in music

Cool cats in music include Australian cult figure Rolf Harris with "The cat came back", eighties pop band Squeeze who had a number three hit with "Cool for cats", and another Australian connection, Eric Bogle, whose self penned song about a cat being run over offended lovers of cats everywhere. Stick to your anti war songs Eric. Andrew Lloyd Webber has of course meowed the critics with his musical "Cats", but mention cats to serious pianists with unpronounceable names and their eyes will glaze frosty, their nostrils flare like crumhorns and in a muttering of incomprehensible sillybulls you may just be able to distinguish the words Scarlatti, "the Cat". This eighteenth century "sonata" was inspired by a cat running across Scarlatti's Hapsichord. The African composer Elle Enfanta was inspired much the same way in the sonata "The elephant".
