turquoise necklace

Turquoise crystal.

Turquoise is either a sky blue or greenish blue semi-precious stone. Turquoise occurs naturally in two different forms. As a small crystal turquoise stones are almost opaque with a sky blue to green hue. This form of turquoise crystal is rare. The second form of turquoise is described scientifically as "massive" turquoise. In this form turquoise stones are characteristically blue. Massive turquoise is more common than turquoise crystal. The turquoise jewellery we stock at Roots is made from massive turquoise. Hence our turquoise necklaces and bracelets can be described as consisting of small pieces of massive turquoise! We do not stock massive pieces of small turquoise.

The name turquoise.

The scientific name for turquoise is hydrated copper aluminium phosphate, hardly a name that captures the beauty of turquoise stone. However it does indicate to us that it is copper oxide that gives turquoise stones their colouring. More romantically however the name turquoise is derived from Turkey. This is because the first known source of turquoise gem stones in the west was Turkey or Turkistan.

Turquoise jewellery.

Turquoise crystals and stones have been used in jewellery such as necklaces and bracelets, rings and earrings for thousands of years. Turquoise gems have also featured as decoration on ornaments throughout the ages.
