Roots is an Aladdin’s cave of a shop. Thousands of items of stock, piled high like heaps of treasure, hanging from the rafters and crammed into corners. Everywhere the eye looks it is greeted with a galaxy of gift ware and a fabulous forest of furnishings. It is the perfect antidote to the frequent sterility of the modern chain store where everything is laid out neat and spacious and orderly, in designs conceived to persuade you to purchase and bully you to buy. Roots by contrast maintains a sense of the mysterious and of joyful choas. Both exotic and quixotic, original and interesting. Hidden like small rare birds in a forest of furnishing, miniature brass Buddha figures, iron framed mirrors, sand animals, incense holders, abstract resin figures and a thousand and one other gifts await discovery by the discerning eye. Larger carved elephants, six foot wooden cats, root chairs and rustic shelves lie camouflaged against the background of household furnishings. Trailing from the ceilings like jungle creepers are bamboo wind chimes, hanging lanterns, bee mobiles. Climbing the walls like creepers are iron candle holders, rustic planters, and picture frames.
